In order to keep up with the increasing administrative work generated by ever increasing volumes of new business Prudential began to employ lady clerks – an innovation in the City. Annual premium income had increased from £1,836 in 1851 to £52,009 in 1861 and £348,975 in 1871 – proof of phenomenal growth over two decades, based on the growth of industrial insurance.
