CR News and Case StudiesPruPIM Collects Business in The Community Awards for a Prudential Grass Roots ProjectReleased by Prudential Property Investment Managers (PruPIM) on 23 Jun 2006 PruPIM collected two Business in The Community awards last night for a Prudential Grass Roots project, a partnership between conservation charity BTCV and Prudential plc, at a ceremony held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Liverpool. Manchester Arndale Grass Roots won in the Power in Partnership category of BiTC’s North West Awards for Excellence. The Power in Partnership Award recognises groups of two or more companies which, through collaborative action, are having a positive impact on communities. The project also won a Neighbourhood Renewal Award for the collaboration of companies in the North West of England having the most significant impact on a community in a deprived area. This award, supported by the Department for Communities and Local Government, identifies the best example in the North West of business impact on those communities targeted by the DCLG’s Neighbourhood Renewal Unit. Since 2001, Prudential Grass Roots has supported communities to improve their local environment. The programme is helping to drive regeneration for people and wildlife in communities around shopping centres and business parks invested in by Prudential plc and managed by PruPIM. So far, eleven projects have been carried out, in areas as diverse as Bradford, Stirling, Reading, Wolverhampton and Cwmbran, South Wales. In addition to leaving lasting environmental benefits, Prudential Grass Roots projects have also helped to tackle social exclusion, encouraging healthy activity, personal development and life-long learning. Manchester Arndale Grass Roots transformed 70 acres of under-developed open space in south Manchester into a superb wildlife-rich variety of habitats with a network of footpaths and a picnic area. The Highfield Country park transformation was an integral part of the £150 million plan to redevelop and transform the PruPIM -managed Arndale Centre in the heart of Manchester, to create the largest in-town shopping centre in the UK. This project involved many different groups, including BTCV, Prudential plc, Manchester Arndale, Friends of Highfield Country Park, Bovis Lend Lease, Manchester City Council, and local community residents. So successful was Manchester Arndale Grass Roots, that a second phase is now under way, called Youth Roots, which aims to increase the active use of Highfield Park by young people from the surrounding area. Youth Roots is part-funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government. Tom Flood CBE, Chief Executive of BTCV said: “Manchester Arndale Grass Roots has shown the important role businesses can play in helping to regenerate deprived communities. Manchester Arndale, Prudential, and Bovis Lend Lease had a vision that BTCV shared and could deliver. I hope this award will encourage other companies to join forces with local communities to help create more pleasant places to live”. Paul Cornes, Director of Corporate Responsibility at PruPIM said: “PruPIM believes that corporate partnerships can play a key role in creating cleaner, greener and safer communities and this award acknowledges the efforts and enthusiasm of local communities to improve their environment. We are delighted to work with BTCV, Bovis Lend Lease and all the other participants who worked so hard to make this project an award-winning success”.
