Charlie Dimmock springs into action in Manchester

04 May 2007

Charlie Dimmock helped children from across the North West transform Manchester Arndale’s Exchange Court into a woodland glade on Friday 4 May to help green volunteering charity BTCV launch its Spring into Action campaign.

The campaign aims to get over 15,000 people involved in looking after their local wildlife and green spaces. From 1 May to 7 June, there will be hundreds of free Spring into Action events running across the UK, with the chance to try your hand at anything from wildlife gardening to dry stone-walling. The campaign is supported by Prudential plc (joint owner of the Manchester Arndale), through its real estate investment arm PRUPIM, the Cabinet Office and Community Channel.

At the Arndale on 4 May:

  • Charlie Dimmock and local children from four schools built bird feeders and insect homes.
  • Habitat Towers were created. Manchester’s newest high-rise accommodation includes everything from ground floor frog refuges to penthouse suites for blue tits.
  • Exchange Court was transformed by over 24 metres of native hedgerow incorporating over 1000 young trees.
  • School children and passers-by joined in with our wildflower identification quiz, and collected a free wild strawberry plant.
  • “Spring into Action”, a new film by Media Trust Productions was premiered, featuring BTCV volunteers Raja, Lizzie, Mike and Karen as they spend a day doing their bit for the environment.
  • Scores of people found out how they can help look after local green space and wildlife with hundreds of opportunities across the North West.

Charlie Dimmock says: “If you want to help your environment, locally is a great place to start. The Spring into Action campaign has events near to everyone in the UK so do join in – it all makes a difference.”

Glen Barkworth, General Manager of Manchester Arndale, said: “The Manchester Arndale wanted to be actively involved in this campaign as it’s a good way of showing that even in the middle of a city, there are things we can all do to help our environment. It was great to see the heart of the Arndale turning to green before our very eyes.”

Rita Shamia, Executive Producer, Media Trust Productions, said “People who volunteer find the experience hugely rewarding and helping your local environment can make a real difference to you and your community. Volunteers can gain new skills meet others from different backgrounds and make new friends. We wanted to highlight this in our film “Spring into Action” which was premiered at the Arndale and will be shown on Community Channel throughout May and June”.
