Corporate Responsibility

Group Environment Policy

Prudential plc is an international retail financial services group that aims to help people to secure and enhance their own and their dependants' financial well-being by providing savings, protection and other products and services suited to their needs.

We consider we have a responsibility to undertake sustainable practices that help preserve the planet. It is therefore our policy to seek to increasingly reduce our environmental impact in all our locations by minimising the use of resources and by wherever possible preventing environmental damage.

The management of environmental issues is an integral part of managing the total risks faced by our business. In this context our key objectives are to:

Meet legal and other requirements

  • We will comply with or where possible exceed environmental legislation requirements and approved codes of practice and put in place appropriate internal best practice standards.
  • We will provide adequate budget and resource for environmental management.

Continuously improve environmental performance

  • We will identify and monitor environmental hazards and assess and control environmental risk.
  • We will prevent environmental incidents where possible and investigate any that do occur to help reduce their number and severity.
  • We will learn from and share information through recognised environmental initiatives such as the UN Environment Programme for Financial Institutions on the Environment and Sustainable Development.
  • We will discuss appropriate best-practice solutions within our industry and with appropriate external agencies and expert parties.

Reduce pollution, emissions and waste

  • We will make efficient use of resources and minimise our use of energy, water and supplies.
  • We will review our energy purchasing policies across our business and where possible purchase and utilise non-polluting and energy-efficient technologies.
  • We will promote reuse and recycling and operate effective waste management systems.

Raise awareness among employees and encourage participation

  • We will communicate this Policy and related material and we will allocate formal environmental responsibilities.
  • We will provide appropriate environmental training, guidance and information.

Expect environmental standards similar to ours from others with whom we interact

  • We will encourage our suppliers, contractors and business partners to adopt best practice in environmental performance and where appropriate, collaborate with them on environmental schemes and initiatives.
  • We will encourage our customers to adopt more environmentally friendly behaviours and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
  • We will liaise with the local community.

Protect shareholders' and other stakeholders' interests

  • We will take all reasonable steps to ensure that wherever possible businesses take environmental issues into account.

Overall responsibility for approving and reviewing our Environment Policy lies with the Prudential plc Board. Each Business Unit is required to implement effective arrangements for managing environmental issues in accordance with the A-Z Compliance Programme and the Group Governance Manual. The responsibility for implementing the Policy rests with our line management and with each employee.

This Policy is the framework for setting and reviewing our environmental objectives and targets. We will measure, audit and report our environmental performance against this Policy.

This Policy will be reviewed periodically, or as required, to ensure that it remains relevant and appropriate.
