Energy consumption

Energy consumption

Total energy consumption is made up of natural gas, electricity and district heat and cooling.

The global occupied estate increased energy consumption by 3.9 per cent in 2016 with the rise attributed to regional business growth and increased data centre activity. Within the UK, energy consumption actually decreased 6.5 per cent. This was driven by the 2015 refurbishment of our Reading office to SKA Silver ( a sustainable fit out standard) and the introduction of agile working practices that allowed us to reduce our occupied floor area. Associated electricity consumption fell 39 per cent year-on-year for the Reading property.

Energy consumption from the investment portfolio, managed by M&G Real Estate, reduced 18 per cent. This is driven by a mix of changes in the portfolio (acquisition and divestment), changes to operational control of the assets and the impact of our energy efficiency investments.
